Free. No account. The file stays on your device.

Lock a PDF with a password so only the people you give it to can open it. The document is encrypted with standard AES encryption that every PDF reader understands, including Adobe Reader, Chrome and phones.

Encryption happens on your device. Neither the file nor the password is sent anywhere, which is the whole point of protecting a document.

How it works

  1. Tap Protect a PDF, then Protect Document in the PDF Tools list.
  2. Choose the PDF and type the password twice.
  3. Download the encrypted copy; the original is left untouched.

Why Document Reader

Questions

Which encryption is used?

AES-256 as defined by the PDF standard, so the file opens in any modern PDF reader after the password is typed.

Can I remove a password from a PDF?

Yes, if you know it: see Unlock PDF. A forgotten password cannot be recovered.

Can I set an owner password that only blocks printing or copying?

The tool sets an open password. Restrictions on printing and copying are not enforced by most readers, so they are not offered.
