OCR: image and scanned PDF to text

Extract text from a photo, screenshot or scanned PDF for free. OCR in your browser, 100+ languages, nothing uploaded. Copy the text or save a searchable PDF.

Free. No account. The file stays on your device.

Turn a picture of a page into real text. Photograph a document, drop in a screenshot or open a scanned PDF, choose the language, and the recognised text appears ready to copy, search, translate or save as a Word file.

Recognition runs entirely in your browser with the open-source Tesseract engine, so a photographed contract or medical result is processed on your own device. Live OCR reads text straight from the camera.

How it works

  1. Tap Start OCR and pick an image, a PDF or the camera.
  2. Choose the language of the text (or leave auto).
  3. Copy the text, export it to Word or text, or save a searchable PDF that keeps the original image.

Questions

Which languages does the OCR support?

More than 100, including English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

How accurate is it?

On a clear, straight scan or photo the recognition is very accurate. Blurry or skewed photos recognise worse: use the scanner tool to straighten the page first.

Can I make a scanned PDF searchable?

Yes. Save a searchable PDF: the page image stays as it is and an invisible text layer is added for search and copy.
